Why You Should Always Get Your Music Mastered Before Releasing It.
Getting your music professionally mastered is important. Here is why mastering matters.
What is music mastering?
To put it simply, mastering is the process which takes your studio recording or mix of a track and ensures it sounds as good as it possibly can no matter how it is listened to or which music download site your music is purchased from.
A mastering engineer will work on your music to ensure the clarity, volume and depth of the track are all the right level to sound as good as it possibly can. It’s not a magic formula that makes a bad track sound great, it’s the finishing touch that will help you achieve that professional sound in your music.
The mastering process will include a range of things including getting the compression, EQ and limiting right.
Why can’t I just master my own Music?
You can of course learn to master music yourself but it is a completely different skill set to producing music. Mastering is an art that requires technical knowledge, experience and specialist equipment.
Mastering also give you (or your mastering engineer) the chance to find any mistakes in the mix-down and correct them before the track is released to the world. Sometimes an outside opinion from someone who knows what they are talking about can be more valuable than anything.
Is Mastering my music expensive?
Mastering does not have to be expensive, prices will vary depending on the engineer or companies experience, location and equipment. Some good engineers will charge as little as £20/track.
If money is tight you can even try to use automated online mastering services such as LANDR.
