Are you breaking the law using your favorite music download site?
How to tell if the music download site you use is legal.
Just a few short years ago the major music piracy threat was torrent sites which at one point accounted for around 90% of all internet piracy. Now music piracy has started to appear in other forms, stream ripping (downloading from sites like YouTube and Soundcloud) and ‘fake’ unlicensed subscription download services.
Some of these unlicensed download subscription sites (many tailored to suit DJ’s) look just like the legitimate sites. Their design and interfaces are often copied from other legal dance music stores making it extremely hard to know if you are paying for a legal service or not.
These illegal sites do not pay any royalties to rights-holders and are completely against the law. Before you sign up to any music service ensure they are fully licensed and you are not paying pirates.
Here are three quick tips to make sure you are paying for a legitimate music service:
1. Google them, make sure they have good reviews from several different sources and are listed as partners on the websites of the major music distributors.
2. Check to see if they are on this list of legal music download sites and streaming services (this list does not include all of the legal music download sites but it does include most of the big players in the market).
3. If you are still unsure if the music download site you use is legal feel free to contact us and we will find out for you.
