5 Fast Ways To Get Past Writers Block When Songwriting
All songwriters need to get past the curse of writers block..
Here are five techniques that might help you get past that pesky writers block:
1. BRAIN DUMP
Take a blank piece of paper, write down everything that comes into your head. No rhyming or schemes just a stream of conscious. Aim to do this for 15 minutes and write down as much as you can. Write about anything and everything you think of.
This process will help rid you of the distracting thoughts and might just surface some new words or ideas to try out in the song you are supposed to be writing.
2. GET OUT
Take a long walk or run. Get away from wherever you are working. Find inspiration around you as you walk, clear your mind of any distractions and get some exercise.
Exercising is an amazing way to re-start your creativity.
3. WRITE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
Many writers claim they are at their most creative early in the morning. It doesn’t matter if you wake up feeling fresh or if your brain still feels clouded and sleepy, you will be amazed at what your half asleep brain can come up with first thing in the morning!
4. GET DISTRACTED
This might seem counter-productive at first but sometimes the one thing you need to find that spark again is a distraction. Try to take an hour away from your song and do anything else thats creative. Paint a picture, draw a sketch, take some photos, write a poem just keep those creative juices flowing and inspire yourself…
5. COLLABORATE
Finding it hard to come up with new ideas on your own? Why not team up with another talented musician and work on the song together. The internet has made the world a very small place. There are lots of great online music collaboration tools in our directory.
I hope these ideas help you and your new song comes together faster than ever. Leave a comment below and let us know how you like to get over writers block 🙂
